DAY OF THE DEAD COOKING CLASS, OCTOBER 31, 8:30 a.m. –
3:00 p.m.
This unique class
allows students to learn traditional Zapotec dishes for the Day of the Dead
festivities where they will recreate the three types of tamales – mole negro,
amarillo, and stewed heirloom black bean tamales - that are prepared to
celebrate this special event. Space is limited, so reserve as soon as possible!

ABOUT DAY OF THE DEAD
- Roundtrip transportation to Teotitlán del Valle (Zapotec village located 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City) from your hotel
- Morning walking tour of the Teotitlán market to purchase fresh, local ingredients where vendors have everything to prepare their Day of the Dead altars
- Welcome chocolate drink and pan de muertos (special Day of the Dead bread)
- Hands-on cooking experience where students prepare cactus salad, salsa, guacamole, three types of Day of the Dead tamales, and dessert
- Sit-down group meal, drink, and mescal
- Full recipe packet in English
ABOUT DAY OF THE DEAD
“Dia de Muertos” is
celebrated with particular fervor in Oaxaca, and specifically in Teotitlan Del
Valle. Every home altar is lavishly decorated with vibrant colors, photos of
passed loved ones, fruit, flowers, candles and special foods thought to entice
the deceased back home for a visit. The festivities culminate with a
multi-course family meal of time-honored dishes.
